Tommy Keane should be bigger. But he does not need it

If you know Tommy Keane, one of the things you know is that there are more people who know about Tommy Keane. He should be huge, this is the way the story. He should have a career with Tom Petty, or at least one Brian Adams. In each of his interviews, every time he talks about it. In the first paragraph of this thing is here, I still can not believe I am calling an obituary. This is real. More people should know him now, maybe they will, but he will not see it here; the day before Thanksgiving, Tommy Keene dies in his sleep. He is 59 years old.

I first read his name in the 1986 Rolling Stone magazine. I remember a positive review of Geffen’s first movie debut, Marshall Crenshaw, which I once loved, and all my favorite artists, Big Star. This is enough for me to seize the opportunity to give up the tape subsidies, because I have played a lot of sound, so I have to be replaced within the same year. Then again a year later.
The song “Movie Song” is the first song Tommy’s most famous song “where to go.” This is a special song. Under the song of guitars and Hollies, the lyrics are about the inevitability of change, the lyrics about leaving your former life behind and about the love that takes you to your future: “Looking back, we are happy with us Never wanted to stay. “For a horrible fifteen-year-old weirdo, his life preceded him with a driver’s license at his fingertips, which sounds like the innermost part of my soul.

For Tommy, changes invade more sweet than sweet. He lost his mother – and we later discovered that the album looked like Marilyn Monroe, and he would insert one beside – accidents and accidents in a teenager. There is a pain, an unease, finding a home in his work. But for those of us who love him, there is a feeling of home in his performance. My brother took me and my friend Kim, the only other person in my world who was then, arrived our first, and the following year, immediately after his execution of the EP came out. Kim and I dance near the stage, ecstatic dance, not a real dance. Tommy wrote “Thanks for your dancing” on the flyer and we asked him to sign us before the performance. The man who made the music of our hearts soar eventually turned out to be a very friendly person.
We are the only two people who closed down and eventually become part of the appeal. He should be huge, but he is not, because of this, if you love him, you think he is necessary. He is a loser, even more than any other artist or child’s favorite artist. In the late 1980s, “Replaces” and “REM” started to play in the top 40, but Tommy remained underground. You have every new record shop you visit through the box to dig, you may dig the opportunity to have no place or return (test) EP. (His first “bizarre alliance” in 1982, even now unlikely to be found under $ 100) his second hit album, Happy Hour, has not changed, but its first song “No Things can change you, “bringing the youth’s romantic masochism to one line -” Stop falling in love with everything that disappoints you “- than most artists have done throughout their careers. We want him more, but to be honest, self-interested, the fact that he stays with us feels good.

He was let down by Geffen and remained low-key for some time, releasing his early work, The Real Underground, in 1994. When he finally recorded a new album, he was released in 1996 under the heading “Ten Years After,” such as after he was the next big event 10 years later. At least he has a sense of humor. He started to play more shows, and if they were in New York within a few hours, I went. There are more people in these shows. Like me, many of them are alone. And not enough.
In 1998, “My Song of the Movie” was released on the movie CD, when I was working at MTV. I managed to mention this album in a live performance because at this time you might find that people are discussing the music on MTV. Shortly thereafter, he played Brownie in New York and his tour manager waved to me after the show was over. He thanked me for his shout and asked if I wanted to go backstage. Of course I did it Back there, Tommy shook my hand and we talked for a moment. I told him I saw him immediately run in St. Louis tour for about ten years time. “Oh, yes,” he said. “You danced.” We’re funny about it.

In the next few years, we remain friendly and I have never missed a chance to see his life. When the fans approached him, he still reached me like him. Even if they just tell him he should be a bigger deal. You should have a great career! what happened? If this is unpleasant, then after a crazy rock show, I heard that you should have been more successful than yours last, and I think so, and you do not know that it would make him look so generous. again and again.
Tommy is gay, this makes sense. In his lyrics, we share the vague, boring pain – the feeling of never being at home. “I’m not puzzled at all,” “they are in their own world,” “where they’ve been,” that says “I was stuck in a shell before you knew me,” whether he meant it or not. Many of his fans are also homosexuals and have never instinctively responded to what he never explicitly expressed in the lyrics, just as the music of the gay mainstream served us at home.

We caught the last Matthew Sweet meeting he had held in Echo, Los Angeles a few months earlier. He crushed A vicious guitarist, as strong as ever, looks much younger than a man pushing 60. In the crowd – and more of us are on the scene this time – and sing every word of “Everywhere Gones” with him. Then he stepped down and milled in the crowd, asking why he did not get bigger.

A great artist can make you think he speaks directly to you. That’s what Tommy Keene has made me feel for the past 31 years, and at the end of the day whether this is the end of the day when 10 or 10 million others have the same a feeling of. The important thing is that we did it.

Tommy Keene survived by his partner Mike, his father, his brother, several nephews, and many of us who never shut up. Not enough, but a lot.
