In Shakespeare’s plays, eating time is a recipe for drama.

Excavations of The Globe revealed a lot about Elizabethan and Jacobean theatergoers' snacking habits.

In Shakespeare’s plays, eating time is a recipe for drama.

Anyone who has spent Thanksgiving with their families knows that the table is a great place to play. We talk, we shout, we love, we fight – or sit still, watch. We were all stuck there, nibbling our ham, performing our usual roles and not getting behind the stage.

This is the idea that William Shakespeare used to fill the theatre.

It is hard to say that Shakespeare won’t clash on the table. This is playwright good excuse, can make a lot of people on the stage at the same time, make friends and strangers come together, and in the close space, roles have no choice, only to talk and interact. And create dramatic tension.

In the “tamed”, Petruchio tried to tame the wayward Katherine, so he stole her between the wedding and the reception, just to let her give in to his family’s non-dinner. Orlando erupts in “you love its palace forest feast”, setting wheels for the final marriage. There was a storm that was disappearing, stone soup retaliating against the Timon in Athens, and the shocking man-eater Titus rox. Just a few.

Petruchio regarded Catherine as his bride in the tact. He stole her between the wedding and the reception and starved to death.

But it’s not just Shakespeare who milks for the play. His fellow playwrights developed an experiment and a real diet for the theater, as the audience was eager to hold more public performances in the late Renaissance London.

In tragedy, Shakespeare’s contemporaries loved murder and eating. The banquet tables were strewn with various types of bodies, which were later called “bloody parties”. John ford in “poor she is a prostitute” played an example: the most memory in annabelle pregnancy by intercourse with her brother giovanni (don’t ask), after she agreed to marry sonam assist. When Soranzo knew the truth, he planned to murder her. But giovanni vanquished him and went into the banquet hall, where his sister’s heart was like a less funny cloth on his dagger.

Such an interruption of the diet is particularly mature and tragic. Maybe it’s different from our family dinner. Everything seems to be the same as usual. Everyone keeps a secret, takes revenge on himself, and then bam! Start crazy.

That’s why Shakespeare served us in the Macbeth dinner scene. “The new king Macbeth invited all anyone in Scotland who to his desk to make sure with him, who is his opponent,” my husband, is also a senior lecturer at the university of east Anglia drama of Daniel forster explains.

But then he lost it. Fantasizing, Macbeth saw the murdered banke on the table and began to speak to himself. “Lady Macbeth pushed him to become a better host,” complained that if he doesn’t want to ‘ceremony held feasts, his guests may stay at home just’ hello ‘, “foster said.

Macbeth saw the specter of bango: the banquet scene was “the opportunity for Macbeth to provide food and entertainment for his subjects, and to prove that he deserved to be king,” said Daniel foster. It was a big failure.

The party was “Macbeth had the opportunity to provide food and entertainment for his theme and to prove that he was worthy of becoming king,” foster said. But Macbeth failed at the dinner party. This, in turn, “shows us that he is unfit to rule.” (by this logic, perhaps enna garten should run for President?)

In the comedy, meals are often plays a different role – it is the writer’s tools, through will all come together to end the conflict, or invite them to dinner after stage, thereby eliminating conflict.

On Tuesday, the apprentices were at the end of Thomas dekker’s “shoemaker’s holiday” eating pancakes on Tuesday, the English version of Fat Tuesday. Justice oddo seemed to welcome the actors and the audience, and generously invited “to my home for dinner” at the last line of Ben jonson’s bartholomew fair. And in Shakespeare, Catherine – now fully domesticated by petruchio – at the end of the taming of the shrew.

But if you look more carefully, we know that if these dramatic food, like our family meal, we all just finish best behavior in the time needed to complete the dinner. The conflict is still boiling beneath the surface, and differences remain. (Katherine is a good example. Does Petruchio really “tame her”? Or is she just waiting for her time?

Whether life will tensions erupted again become a bloody party or another form of comedy of misunderstanding, of course, it all comes down to set the stage for theatre and theatre playwright.
