In Shakespeare’s plays, eating time is a recipe for drama.
Anyone who has spent Thanksgiving with their families knows that the table is a great place to play. We talk, we shout, we love, we fight – or sit still, watch. We were all stuck there, nibbling our ham, performing our usual roles and not getting behind the stage.
It is hard to say that Shakespeare won’t clash on the table. This is playwright good excuse, can make a lot of people on the stage at the same time, make friends and strangers come together, and in the close space, roles have no choice, only to talk and interact. And create dramatic tension.
In the “tamed”, Petruchio tried to tame the wayward Katherine, so he stole her between the wedding and the reception, just to let her give in to his family’s non-dinner. Orlando erupts in “you love its palace forest feast”, setting wheels for the final marriage. There was a storm that was disappearing, stone soup retaliating against the Timon in Athens, and the shocking man-eater Titus rox. Just a few.
But it’s not just Shakespeare who milks for the play. His fellow playwrights developed an experiment and a real diet for the theater, as the audience was eager to hold more public performances in the late Renaissance London.
In tragedy, Shakespeare’s contemporaries loved murder and eating. The banquet tables were strewn with various types of bodies, which were later called “bloody parties”. The conflict is still boiling beneath the surface, and differences remain. (Katherine is a good example. Does Petruchio really “tame her”? Or is she just waiting for her time?
Whether life will tensions erupted again become a bloody party or another form of comedy of misunderstanding, of course, it all comes down to set the stage for theatre and theatre playwright.
